TD High School Jazz Intensive
The SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival believes in supporting young musicians by providing opportunities that will assist youth of all skill levels. With the support of TD the Festival is proud to program the TD High School Jazz Intensive as an integral part of the Festival.
PROGRAM
Under the guidance of distinguished jazz educators, program participants will create and work toward a public performance at The Bassment — the home of jazz in Saskatoon — on Friday, July 1st as part of the 25th edition of the Festival.
The program runs Saturday, June 25 to Friday, July 1 and is restricted to high school aged musicians from grade 9–12.
What participants can expect:
- Challenging opportunities for students of all musical levels
- Program focusing on improvisation and creative musical exploration
- Increased attention on small ensemble sessions
- More one on one time between clinicians and participants.
- Full group sessions where all participants perform and learn together
- Jam sessions featuring clinicians and participants
- Increased focus on instrumental techniques, education, and appreciation
- Workshop session featuring special guest musicians
- Participants receive a Festival Pass. This pass is good for any concert during the Festival as long as the concert is not sold out 10 minutes prior to show start. (Excludes Solstice Brunch. Only students 19 years and older may attended exclusively licensed events.)
What makes this experience particularly exciting and completely unique in our province is the opportunity for students to interact with touring musicians performing at the Festival. At least one touring musician will drop in on the program and conduct a workshop with the students. The students will also have the opportunity to be part of the audience at Festival concerts.
HOW TO APPLY + FEES
Most of the costs of conducting the TD High School Jazz Intensive are borne by its generous sponsors. Only a small portion of the cost is charged to the participants.
All applicants to the program must submit an application and pay a non-refundable fee of $10. Upon acceptance, a registration fee of $60 per participant applies.

Students from outside Saskatoon are responsible for their own transportation, accommodations and meals.

ABOUT THE CLINICIANS
Mark DeJong is a musician, composer, bandleader and original member of the Outer Bridge Ensemble. Mark holds a Masters in jazz performance from Rutgers University, and is active as a performer and clinician throughout North America. He has has shared the stage with Ray Charles, Lennie Pickett, Kenny Wheeler, Rob McConnell, Moe Koffman, Ralph Bowen, Sean Jones, Dean McNeill, Hugh Fraser, Tommy Banks, and PJ Perry.
Students can catch Mark and the Outer Bridge Ensemble on June 27 at the Broadway Theatre with the Christian McBride Quintet and July 2 at The Bassment.
Stephen Hudson is a pianist and composer whose eclectic musical projects include styles such as jazz, indie, chamber music, and world music projects. A graduate of the Manhatten School of Music, he performs regularly in New York City, in addition to doing concerts in Canada and Europe.
David Freeman was born and raised in New Jersey and is currently based in New York City. Freeman performs regularly on drums, percussion and tabla, and is also an accomplished composer and educator. He has composed music for a major motion picture, has recorded as both a bandleader and sideman, and has worked with artists in film, dance and the visual arts.
A native of Cleveland, Jerome Jennings currently lives in New York, and has studied with some of the worlds’ finest drummers, including Ralph Peterson, Victor Lewis, and Tony Reedus. In 2007 Jerome completed his Masters at The Julliard School of the Performing Arts in Manhattan, New York, and has since toured with Rolling Stones saxophonist Tim Ries, legendary pianist Hank Jones, and the one and only Sonny Rollins.
James Delano Zollar began his musical career at age 9 playing bugle in his hometown, Kansas City Missouri. Zollar was featured in Robert Altman’s motion picture “Kansas City”, in Madonna’s music video “My Baby’s Got a Secret”, as well as Malcolm Lee’s film “The Best Man”. Today, he’s playing with The Duke Ellington Orchestra, The Count Basie Orchestra, Don Byron’s Bands, The Marty Ehrlich Sextet and working with the Latin piano master Eddie Palmieri.
As an alumnus of the Jazz Intensive program, Soren Nissen has emerged as one of Canada’s young talents on the bass. In 2008, Soren moved to Toronto to study and pursue music full time. He has been studying at Humber College and is currently entering his 4th and final year in the music degree program. He is a member of the Humber College Studio Jazz Ensemble and has toured through British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec with this group. He has also performed with Terence Blanchard and recorded two full length albums while a member of this band. Soren has received the Toronto Musicians’ Association Moe Koffman Memorial Award and the Edward L. Frankel Award while studying at Humber College.
